Six in the evening in Indian summer is its own specific feeling. The worst of the heat has passed, there is something cold in hand, and suddenly the idea of eating something small but actually good becomes very appealing. Not dinner. Not a full plate. Just something worth snacking on while the day winds down.

The problem is that most people either reach for a packet of something or make nothing at all. Both are fine, but there is a third option that takes about the same effort as opening a packet and tastes considerably better.

What Makes an Evening Snack Work

The drink is already there. The snack just needs to hold its own next to it without demanding attention or time. Heavy food kills the mood of a cool summer drink. So does something so plain it barely registers.

Butter Toast with a Twist

The simplest version of a good evening snack is toast, but not the sad kind made with whatever is convenient.

A Note on Quantity
